Galway and Aughnanure Castle

We finally made it Galway! Yea! This was where our first day ended. We stayed at Hotel Meyrick in Eyre Square. I really liked this hotel. It had character.

Our Room

Brad did not find this funny at all. We ended up having twin beds our first night in Ireland. My dad on the other hand thought it was hilarious and made sure everyone back home knew!

There wasn't an air conditioner in this room, which I found to be odd. But the weather was very pleasant inside. We opened the window for a breeze. What I also found to be odd was that the windows opened fully with no screen. I guess they don't have a problem with people falling/jumping out!

Unlike American hotel bathrooms, the only outlet in any of the bathrooms was for an electric men's shaver. There were also no 'face cloths' to wash your face with. We learned at a different hotel that you could request them. But if you called them wash cloths they would not know what you are talking about.

This picture was actually taken from the hotel website that I linked above. But we did get in this hot tub on the roof our second night here. It was nice. The view is a bit industrial but the open roof gave us a nice view of the full moon!

The picture below was taken because in July my sister Amy came to Galway for a business meeting. She had a fun idea to find somewhere that I would be going to on my honeymoon and take a picture of her sitting there. This bench was the place. She is going to see if her husband can photo shop me into her picture so it will appear we are there together. Mine is blurrier than hers and it is rainy in mine, so we shall see how that goes....

This picture was taken of me at Ed's New York Pizza in Eyre Square. We ate lunch there twice. It was good pizza. We met Ed, the owner. He is actually from New York. Stop by his place if you go to Galway.

On our way out of the city we saw these strange garages. Most of them were small enough for only one car. After parking your car and walking out of the garage you would go into this side door next to it to walk up to the back door. The front door was on the reverse street with only room for a sidewalk that leads up to the front of your house. It was quite amusing to me.

This next castle was not planned. We were actually headed to see the Kylemore Abbey. But it was getting late and raining and I was tired. We were about to head back to Galway to try getting an earlier start out the next day when we saw a small sign for a castle built in the 1500's. So we decided to follow the sign.

The castle is called Aughnanure Castle. The walk up to it was very pretty. A parking lot was some distance out. From there you walked around a rock pathway that curved around. A small creek was flowing beside the walkway. On down we had to cross a bridge and came to the entrance of the castle.

It was rainy and our batteries ran out before we could take a picture of the pretty walk way. You can see the thick beautiful green grass. It was so pretty.

This is a drawing of what the castle supposedly looked like back when it was built.

I am glad we found this place. I really enjoyed touring it.
